This coming Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of the Lenten season. On Ash Wednesday, we recall the biblical custom of covering ourselves in ashes. By doing this, we mark ourselves in two ways: as those who are in mourning for our crucified Christ, and as those who are filled with a heart of sorrow for their sins.
While our Advent celebrations are filled with Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love as we remember the birth of our Messiah, Lent is when we focus on the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Traditionally, many believers choose to participate in some sort of fasting during this time—people have been known to fast from various foodstuffs as well as television and Internet usage. Others have chosen to fast to something like visiting the sick, engaging in studying the Bible more closely or experience a time of solitude.
Perhaps you will commit to attending services from now until the glory of Easter or dedicating a larger portion of your day to a time of prayer.
During our first five weeks of the year, the sermon series, “BETTER – New Year and You” provided us with messages that focused on making BETTER PRIORITIES, RELATIONSHIPS and CHOICES in helping us to be a BETTER WITNESS.
I would like to extend a special invitation to you and your family to join me as we prepare for a time of tremendous spiritual growth and renewal. Our Tuesday Evening Lenten Bible Study will begin on Tuesday, February 20 at 7PM with the various names of God, titles, and descriptions of God.
This Sunday we will celebrate ABC USA (American Baptist Churches, USA) and Black History month with reflections. The Theme: Mission is at the Heart of What We Do! The missions of CBC extend with our belonging to ABC USA and is a testimony of this church’s commitment over the years. In this Black History month, it is noteworthy to share about CBC being an underground railroad stop as part of the historical aspects in the life of CBC.
It is also Transfiguration Sunday, and the message is titled “Shining Light/Bright Lights.” Our scripture text will include 2 Corinthians and Mark 9:2-9.
