Cross Work

On Sunday you might have noticed the new sidewalk leading up to the main doors of the sanctuary. This is part of the larger restoration project that will include new doors in the near future. A big thanks goes to Bill Kirkman and the rest of the Property and Finance team for working so hard to care for the safety and well being of our community in this way.

Bill took this lovely picture of the work being done through the cross window in the front door of the church. I’ve been sitting with this photo for a week and it keeps bringing tears to my eyes.

It’s such a powerful image.

It reminds me of how we’re to look at the world—that our perspective should be Christ-centered looking at the world, each other, and ourselves through the complicated and messy symbol of the cross.

Seeing the crew at work through the cross is a call to action outside the walls of the sanctuary. While we come into to the sanctuary to be refreshed and renewed, encouraged and challenged, the real work of the church is out in the world. Being God’s people means working to make paths smooth and accessible for all God’s people. It means paving the way for people to find their way to a place where they can receive the love and peace of Christ.

And that’s part of what we’ll be doing when we come together on Saturday—discerning how best to be at work in the world; how to make the love of Christ known as we keep Christ the focus of who we are. I look forward to seeing you there!

In Love
