As the 2024 Summer Olympics come to a close, the competition for the gold, bronze and silver medals are being sealed in the historical pages of Olympic history. We can expect to see highlights as they become part of the commercials, along with the endorsements for both the winners and losers. The spectacular records being broken and new targets that will be established are what we can expect for the future.
While all of this takes place, we remain challenged by the gun violence going on locally and around the country. When a family circle is broken, there is the pain of loss and when it is unexpected or tragic, the pain is deeper and nearly unbearable. Mass shootings are trending similar to last year with over 330 incidents and as of this week, there have been 47 officers killed. An interesting statistic is 2 female officers, and 45 male officers have lost their lives this year.
This one comes close to home for us at CBC with the grief expressed by the Wordlaw & Davenport families, as this is something that only others who have walked this journey can fully comprehend. We pray for God’s strength and comfort, while we consider our unique role along with the ABC USA in this epidemic of senseless killing.
The Summer Sermon Series with our prayer emphasis becomes more meaningful as we seek to model the Lord’s Prayer in expressing how desires to God. Please join me on this Sunday, as we share the next installment from the series, Lord Teach Us How To Pray – God’s Protection, “lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.” Several of the selected scriptures will include Psalms 27:1-3; 1 Corinthians 10:13; Ephesians 6:13 and Romans 8:37.
